The practical setup
For short visits, prepare Alipay and WeChat / Weixin Pay with eligible international cards before arrival. Large hotels, airports, and some higher-end merchants may accept international cards directly, but day-to-day China movement is still built around mobile payment and local app flows.
The useful question is not only whether your Visa or Mastercard exists. It is whether your card works inside the exact app, merchant QR, ride-hailing, hotel, and verification flow you will need during the first day.
Keep some cash and a second card as backup. Cash can solve edge cases, but it does not replace app readiness for Didi, app-based services, QR-first merchants, or local logistics.
What not to assume
A tourist payment setup is not the same as a full local bank-connected wallet. Merchant payments may work while person-to-person transfers, wallet balance movement, red packets, or personal QR flows may remain unavailable or inconsistent.
Do not plan your arrival around USDT-to-Alipay balance top-ups, RMB wallet transfers, or somebody else's account. These are not CCAC public service promises and they attract the wrong risk profile.
If you are coming for business meetings, a conference, or a late arrival, check the full arrival sequence: airport, ride, hotel deposit, food, convenience purchases, side-event movement, and backup communication.
Best-fit fallback plan
Use official app payments first. Keep direct international card use for hotels and larger merchants when available. Keep cash for smaller fallback moments. Keep a local support contact for translation, hotel, driver, and payment failure interpretation.
If a payment failure appears, record the exact app, merchant, card country, error wording, transaction amount, and whether it is a merchant QR or personal QR. That context matters more than a generic statement like 'my card does not work in China.'
When to use CCAC
