The clean default
Buy and test a travel eSIM or international roaming plan before departure. The goal is simple: be reachable immediately after landing, before airport Wi-Fi, SIM counters, hotel Wi-Fi, or local help become necessary.
A data-only eSIM may not provide a China phone number, but many short-term visitors do not need a local number for every task. What they need first is stable data for Telegram, maps, translation, Didi, and their CCAC support contact.
Keep your home number active if app verification may arrive by SMS. A China data plan does not help if your banking, Alipay, WeChat, email, or Telegram login still depends on the original number.
When a local SIM makes sense
A local China SIM can make sense for longer stays, local-number verification, business operations, or travelers who know they will need Chinese SMS and direct domestic calling. It is not automatically the best first step for every short visit.
Chinese SIM cards require real-name registration through official channels. CCAC does not provide anonymous SIM cards, store passport copies, or arrange no-ID phone numbers.
If you need a local number, use an official airport or carrier counter with your own passport and your own phone. Counter locations, opening hours, packages, and prices can change, so do not build the entire arrival around one unverified counter.
Practical landing plan
Before flying, confirm your phone is unlocked, supports the eSIM or roaming route you chose, and can still receive verification messages. Save airport Wi-Fi instructions and your support contact in a place that is available offline.
After landing, use eSIM or roaming first. Use airport Wi-Fi if that fails. Only spend airport time on a local SIM if a China number is truly needed or your itinerary allows the delay.
When to use CCAC
Use Comms Setup if your main risk is data, verification, eSIM, roaming, WeChat, Alipay, Telegram, or local number choice. Use Landing Kit if connectivity needs to be coordinated with payment, Didi, hotel, and first-night movement.
If you want this configured before you fly, book CCAC Landing Kit or start with a free arrival brief.
